by Ambalangoda Central special correspondent The newly restored main shrine room (Budu Geya) of the Purana Subadrarama Maha Viharaya of Ambalangoda will be ceremonially opened by the Chairman of the Ambalangoda Urban Council G.M.S. de Silva on Sunday December 15. This Buddhist temple more commonly known a Karatta Kanda Pansala was built in the early 1800s. The Chief incumbent of this Viharaya Venerable Ambalangoda Sirinanda Nayake thera when he assumed duties in 1990 his first concern was restoring the old and decaying buildings, ancient paintings and sculptured figures and objects of this ancient temple. Apart from the restoration program a motorable approach to the temple was also constructed on the initiative of the Nayake thera. Venerable Sirinanda thera referring to the restoration work of the shrine room said they were being slowly restored and the entire work was handled and completed at a considerable cost. The executive Dayaka committee and the Kulagana Society of the Viharaya gave the incumbent a great deal of encouragment. The Nayaka thera said that his efforts at preserving this nineteenth - century Buddhist temple far the benefit of posterity have been rewarding and persons from near and for have helped the restoration and renovation programmes immensely by contributing cash donations and resources for its successful completion. Maha Nayaka Thera of the Amarapura Nikaya Most Venerable Ambalangoda Sumangala thera and several other prominent Bhikkus have been invited to grace the occasion. This ceremony will be concluded with the performance of "Suvisi Vivarana Pooja" and Dhamma sermons being held on eight consecutive days from December 15. |
