Social, cultural values must be inculcated from young age - Minister

by Kandy staff correspondent

Social and cultural values must be inculcated in the minds of the younger generation to create a trouble free society, said Central Region Development Minister Tissa Attanayake.

He was speaking as the Chief Guest at the annual price giving of Daham Pasal organised by the Divisional Secretary of Medadumbara. He said due to the erosion of education and cultural values, there are widespread robberies, corruption and other anti-social activities.

Attanayake said Buddhism and its culture has been preserved for over 2,500 years. This must be further preserved by teaching children the values of life and to respect religion, culture, the clergy, parents and elders. The Minister said the kings and the clergy had done their best in the past to preserve Buddhism, Buddhist culture and activities which contributed for the people to practise this faith.

Central Province Chief Minister W.M.P.B. Dissanayake said religious activities in the Central Province will be given pride of place.
