Maintain close rapport with media - IGP

by Sarath Malalasekera

The Police Department in an effort to improve its image as a modern and efficient law enforcement outfit will have a closer rapport with the media both at central and regional levels.

This follows a circular issued by IGP T.E. Anandarajah to all DIGs, Divisional and District Officers and OICs of all Police Stations countrywide.

Citing several incidents where the trust and cooperation between the Police and the media had been ruptured due to arbitrary actions and behaviour of certain Police officers, the IGP in his circular has emphasised the need to have a good rapport with the media since their assistance was vital for most investigations.

IGP Anandarajah said that it is natural for media personnel to elicit every possible information since their prime objective is to gather whatever information possible. Therefore it was the duty of Police officers to always assist the media to the maximum possible extent.

It was also necessary for Police Officers to have a close relationship not only with media institutions but also with provincial correspondents for it to be meaningful. By helping the media the Police can gain the publicity it needs.

The IGP has instructed all OICs in the country to obtain addresses and telephone numbers from the media personnel in the area and send a copy to the Director Police Public Relations at the Police Headquarters. The Superintendent or an Assistant Superintendent of the Division should summon them once a week to have a close rapport the IGP ordered.
