Ministry sets up 93 cultural centres

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The Cultural Affairs Division of the Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry has set up 93 cultural centres countrywide at a cost of Rs. 186 million under its Regional Cultural Centre Programme.

Three more cultural centres set up under the same programme will be opened in Rambukkana, Balangoda and Ayagama Divisional Secretariat divisions soon, a Cultural Affairs Division spokesman said. He said the programme's main aim is to provide cultural centres for all Divisional Secretariat divisions.

The Cultural Affairs Ministry spends Rs.2 million per each cultural centre. These centres consist of a small library, a theatre, facilities for drama and dance rehearsals, facilities for indoor and outdoor sports. The Ministry also provides books, musical instruments, sports and audio visual equipment for each centre. These cultural centres offer dancing training courses, music courses and drama courses.

The centres also conduct seminars and workshops on photography, painting and sculpture.

Art exhibitions and sales are also held at these centres.

The cultural centres also function as research and preservation centres for cultural traditions.
