125 most backward villages to be developed

The Ministry of Rural Economy will develop the 125 most backward villages scattered throughout the country during the year 2003 under the community-based programme implemented by the Ministry to uplift poor villages.

According to an extensive survey conducted by the Department of National Planning, 250 villages which are extremely poor have been selected and a comprehensive report has been prepared on these villages, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has entrusted the Ministry of Rural Economy with the responsibility of selecting the 125 most backward villages to develop immediately.

He said the information on these 250 villages have been selected according to the economic zone basis including Central Province (60 villages), North- East Province (80 villages), North Western Province (30 villages), Southern Province (50 villages) and Western Province (30 villages).

The Ministry will allocate Rs.125 million to develop these villages including Rs.1 million for each village.
