Jaffna tours from Hawk Travels

Hawk Travels Ltd., has introduced a special tour package to Jaffna the most talked about destination in Sri Lanka in recent time.

Hawk Travels Ltd., has sought the assistance of Lionair to transport the tour group to and from Palali on their new Hawker Siddley aircraft. An air conditioned coach will be deployed for ground arrangements in Jaffna.

Tour accommodation will be comfortable and is offered from the best available in Jaffna. However those joining the tour will have to have an `open mind' since Jaffna did not have any improvement in infrastructure development in the tourism product for nearly 20 years.

A tour to Jaffna at this juncture of the year will be an ideal opportunity for families to get-together and experience a `long lost land of Sri Lanka'.

Further details can be obtained from Hawk Travels.

Absence of colour in Colombo

Arena, the Lifestyle Store synonymous with 'high street fashion' has brought down "Absence of Color" a supremely talented group from Atlanta, with a knack for incorporating everything from pop and R&B to blues, gospel and reggae into their distinctive sound. this seven member group is to perform at the newly refurbished club, 'The Boom' (formerly known as Colombo 2000) 'Galadari Hotel', commencing Friday December 13 right through until mid-February 2003. SriLankan Airlines, Three Coins Beer Company (Pvt) Ltd, Coca-Cola, Levi's and Benson & Hedges are the other organisations associated with this venture. What's more, in time for New Year's Eve and a week thereafter is Canadian-born songstress, Quisha Wint, who will join AOC exploding 'The Boom' into vibrant action.

Six nights a week with the exception of Monday, 'The Boom' will be open from 10 p.m. onwards and ironically the music scene locally which was devoid of colour until now will boom to the sounds of 'Absence of Color'. So don't let the name of this group fool you. AOC are anything but bland! And, this is just the beginning!

Art & Culture : Poetic paintings at the wendt

The exhibition will be held at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery from December 7 to 9.

This is the eighth one-man exhibition of the painter and poet M.Chandrapala.

His work is not confined to one style, or one medium, and he had the benefit of a training at Government College of fine Arts (Heywood). Unlike so many of his other contemporaries, he is also a graduate, and obtained his degree in 1963, from Kelaniya University.

Apart from exhibitions in this country he has successfully had ones abroad too, finding connoisseurs for his work in countries like Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Italy, and many others.

That speaks volumes of his special skills which he has honed during a period of well over twenty years. I have known him personally during this creative period of his and followed his development as an artist with much hope and satisfaction. He has, as mentioned at the begining, a variety of styles, and as mentioned in previous reviews, he has been influenced by George Keyt, and the Bengali School of Painters, principal. In many works, however he shows a distinctiveness in both composition and use of colour. Hence his attraction for foreign buyers, and collectors.

I hope most those who have followed his career with interest will find something as exciting and interesting here as in his previous exhibitions.

I must not forget to mention that he is a poet too with quite a few published collections to his credit, the last volume having been entitled 'Socratesge Pavahan' which critics found exceptionally interesting. A little of his poetry manifests itself in his paintings, and I hope art lovers would find it rewarding to see this exhibition.
