33 dead in Philippine bus accident

MANILA, Sunday (AFP)

Thirty-three people were killed and six injured when a commuter bus plunged into a ravine in Quezon province southeast of the Philippines capital early Sunday, police said.

The bus was speeding on a highway near the village of San Vicente when it suffered mechanical failure, said officer Jaime de la Rosa of the local police.

"The accident happened near San Vicente and it is confirmed that 33 people were killed and six others were injured and evacuated to a hospital," de la Rosa said over DZBB radio.

"According to the survivors, there was a mechanical defect and the vehicle careened to the right and fell into the creek some 30 meters (yards) deep," he said.
