Hambantota villages will be developed through 577 programme

Minister of Southern Region Development Ananda Kularatna said the 577 programme will project mainly on the development of villages through the threefold factors, community participation, Businessmen's contribution and Ministerial co-ordination. Mr. Kularatna said so at the ceremony held to hand over the Sooriyawewa, Andrawewa village to the Lanka Organic Ltd.

The Minister said that the Hambantota District was hit by a severe drought last year.

Several Colombo businessmen came to their rescue and I asked them to assist in this venture.

Their view was that they could provide assistance if there are some organised plans.

Accordingly a plan incorporating 576 GS Divisions in the district was formulated and submitted to them and they had expressed their desire to hand over each individual GS Division. As a result not a cent of the Ministry funds were spent on the project. We contributed intellectually towards its success.

My next aim is to handle the construction of the Hambantota Harbour, which will be a blessing to the Hambantota masses.

The political affiliation of such businessmen will not be considered as it will only hinder development.

If they are willing to work, we shall work together, therefore, do not accuse me that certain parties only are benefited. Let us forget all differences and work together in harmony.

Chamal Rajapaksa MP said all should work with dedication and effort to alleviate poverty.

Subsidies will not help in eradicating poverty. Today the entire world is focusing on foods produced by utilising carbonic fertilizer. Hence, you have been blessed with a golden opportunity of working with the company.

Consultant Deshabandu Victor Hettigoda said enhancement of one's position will always need sincere dedication and interest in any venture undertaken. I wish to mention that the masses of this village have placed their maiden step towards development.

I take this opportunity to appeal to the people, to contribute towards their virtuous deed launched by Mr. Muttusamy, Chairman Organic Lanka Ltd with dedication and interest.

Dammika Gunasekera - Managing Director Organic Lanka Ltd said we envisage the purchase of valuable plants naturally grown in several areas of the district at a considerable value for export purposes.

We now engage in the export of carbonic products in which Cloves and Cardamom are included.

We also anticipate to purchase at a higher price, Margossa and Erandu for the production of oil.

These raw materials will be for the manufacture of by-products for which the villagers can participate. New technologies will be introduced.

Organic Lanka Ltd distributed high yielding feed of Madurutala, Welpenela, Polpala, Hathavariya etc and a programme is launched by which the crop could be sold to the company at a reasonable price.

A part of payment made by farmers were used as saving for their children and saving accounts (Rs. 500) were opened and distributed among them.
