SriLankan Airlines flies indoor cricket teams SriLankan Airlines recently flew the Sri Lanka men's and women's cricket teams for the 4th Indoor Cricket World Cup 2002 tournament in Wellington, New Zealand. This is the first time that Sri Lanka took part in an Indoor Cricket World Cup. Matches were played at the Wellington Indoor Sports Centre with teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, England, India and Sri Lanka vying for top slot. SriLankan Airlines flew in four officials and 24 players, both men and women for the event, thus becoming the official carrier of the Sri Lankan contingent. Captained by Asela Pathirana, the Sri Lankan men's team was sponsored by Caltex Lubricants Lanka Ltd. The women's team led by Vanessa Bowen de Silva was sponsored by Star Trans International. The co-sponsors were Austasia Sports, and Lanka Yalta. Reigning champions Australia emerged overall champions at the grand finals. New Zealand came a close second as runners-up while first timers Sri Lanka notched third position. A SriLankan Airlines spokesman said that the company was happy to get involved with sports events of this nature, with a view to bridging countries and peoples. The success of recent experiences with the SriLankan Airlines Golf Festival, Singer-SriLankan Airlines Rugby Sevens and Asian Athletic Championships further consolidated this idea, he said. |
