HSBC creates major upset

The HSBC 'A' team created a major upset when they beat the favourites Ranawana Security Company Limited 56-55 in their Delmege Super League basketball tournament 'B' Division match played at the Otters Aquatic Club courts yesterday.

M. Nilanga made a top score of 23 for HSBC 'A' who led 28-25 at half time. S. Amila did most of the scoring for Ranawana Security with a contribution of 20 points. This was also the first win for HSBC 'A' team from three outings and the first defeat for Ranawana Security who are strongly tipped to win the 'B' Division title.

Meanwhile Delmege Group bounced back into recognition with a morale boosting 79-46 win over Seylan Bank. Delmege had the game well under control from the start and took a commanding 50-22 lead at half time. Prageeth Pushpakumara led the way with a superb contribution of 25 points while Manjula Jayaratne excelled for Seylan Bank with 18 points. Airport and Aviation qualified to play in the semifinals of the 'C' Division tournament when they beat Lanka Bell 62-47 in their final league match. Airport and Aviation led 34-25 at half time with a major contribution of 28 points coming from Indika Silva. Lanka Bell's top scorer was Roshan de Soysa who contributed 20 points.

Airport and Aviation will now meet Ceylinco in the first semifinal and Maritime Holdings will confront Hatton National Bank 'B' in the second semifinal when the tournament conducted by the Mercantile Services Basketball Association and sponsored by Delmege Group, continues at the same venue today.
