Nirosh defeats Barbadian FIDE Master Current national chess champion Nirosh de Silva (ELO 2236) playing on board number 1, followed up his impressive victory over a Grand Master by outplaying his highly rated opponent FIDE Master Zmestan Ricardo of Barbados (ELO 2282) in the 13th round of the World Chess Olympiad at Bled, Slovenia. Playing Black, Nirosh withstood the attack on his king, avoided playing for a draw and was able to find a line which gave him winning chances. He manoeuvred the game into a critical ending where he had knight, bishop and 5 pawns against Zmestan's rook and 5 pawns. Zmestan resigned after 52 moves as one of black's pawns was about to promote. |
