Woeful England crushed

BRISBANE, Australia, Sunday - Australia skittled England for 79 to score a crushing 384-run victory over England with a day to spare in the first Ashes cricket Test at the Gabba here on Sunday.

Glenn McGrath claimed 4-36 and Shane Warne 3-29 to demolish the bewildered Englishmen in 28.2 overs and a batting time of 127 minutes. It was England's lowest innings score at the Gabba since their 114 in the 1990-91 series. The overwhelming victory continues Australia's domination of England in Ashes contests and they have now won 11 of the last 15 Ashes Tests.

Steve Waugh's men are firmly on course to retain the Ashes with four Tests to play. The second Test starts in Adelaide on November 21.

Only No.3 Mark Butcher showed any resistance to the Australian bowlers and scored 40 in 116 minutes before he became one of Warne's three wickets on a turning pitch. England triggered the collapse in the space of an amazing five balls, losing three wickets and accelerating their inevitable demise.

Nasser Hussain could only edge an unplayable McGrath delivery to Ricky Ponting at second slip who took a sensational sprawling catch.

The England skipper, who survived a huge appeal for caught behind off Gillespie when he was on four, made 11 in just under an hour.

There was mayhem in Warne's next over when John Crawley was farcically run out by wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.

Crawley set off for a run for a bye past Gilchrist but Justin Langer swooped on the ball and relayed to Gilchrist.

Gilchrist quickly summed up the situation and threw down the stumps at the bowler's end with Crawley out of his ground and on his way back to the pavilion.
