Twenty special investigation units to be set up - Interior Minister by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi and Ranil Wijayapala Around 20 new Special Investigation Units will be set up covering the whole country with a view to crack down on corruption, crimes and other illegal business. Interior Minister John Amaratunga told Parliament on Saturday that these special units will be set up under each DIG in the respective areas so that efficient and impartial investigations will be conducted against such malpractices and corruptions. The Minister was responding to an adjournment motion moved by the JVP MP Bimal Ratnayake who referred to the recent abolition of the Special Vice Squad located at Walana, Panadura. The member stated that all the officers attached to this unit had been transferred to other sections." This unit rendered a great service in combating illegal businesses specially the illicit liquor trade. This unit is defunct now which has enabled the wrongdoers to carry out their businesses without any obstacle." However, Minister Amaratunga responded to this saying that steps have been taken to establish around 20 units instead of such one squad." We have already established three such units and have instructed them to carry out their duties in an impartial manner", he added. The Minister revealed that under the guidance of the new IGP, reforms are taking place in the Police Department in order to ensure a better and satisfactory service to the people. "During the previous regime, there were a lot of shortcomings in the Police service and officers were highly disappointed about the way transfers and promotions were handled. We are now changing this situation for the better," he added. |
