President celebrates eight years in office

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's 8th anniversary in office as the President will be officially celebrated at President's House, Colombo, tomorrow morning (November 12) with the participation of the Mahasangha and other religious leaders as well as the Ministers including the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, foreign diplomats and a large number of distinguished invitees.

Tomorrow, the celebrations will begin at 9.00 a.m. with religious blessings by the Mahanayaka Theras of the three Nikayas, Colombo Arch Bishop Very Reverend Oswald Gomis, Kurukkals Swami Kadigesu and Swamy Soma of Munneswaram Temple and the Chief Priest of the Davatagaha Mosque, Colombo.

At 9.30 a.m. the President will receive a Guard of Honour by the Armed Forces opposite the President's House, Colombo, after which she will address the nation at 10.00 a.m. The event will be aired live over Rupavahini and SLBC.

A book titled "Minisathbawata Punarjeewanaya" (Humanistic Renaissance) in all the three languages embodying the President's vision and an anthology of President's speeches will be launched to mark the occasion.

As a prelude to the celebrations, an overnight "pirith" chanting by the chief priests of the three nikayas took place at the President's House last night (November 10) followed by "heel danaya" this morning.

In addition, temple bells in places of religious worship country wide will rent the air at 6.00 p.m. today (Nov.11) followed by religious observances. Local celebrations are scheduled for November 13.
