Dhamma talks

Renowned Buddhist scholar Bhikkhu Bodhi, President of Buddhist Publications Society (BPS) will be in Sri Lanka on a short visit this month. He is now resident in the United States of America.

During his stay, Bhikkhu Bodhi will deliver three Dhamma talks - two at the BPS, Kandy and the other at the Narada Centre in Colombo. The first talk will be at BPS, Kandy on November 22 at 5.00 p.m. and the second at the Narada Centre on November 24 at 6.00 p.m.

The last talk will be at BPS, Kandy on November 29 at 5.00 p.m.

During his visit, Bhikkhu Bodhi will open the new building constructed at the Kandy Headquarters of the BPS.

The opening ceremony has been arranged for November 15. It will be followed by Pirith chanting in the evening and a Shanghika Dana, the following day.

Bhikkhu Bodhi will spend most of his time at the Forest Hermitage, Kandy where well-wishers will be able to meet him. He will spend three days in Colombo from November 22-25 and will stay at the Narada Centre.

He will also inspect the Colombo bookshop opened by BPS at Narada Centre.

Bhikkhu Bodhi will also hold discussions with the Board of Trustees and the staff of the BPS on the future program of work to be undertaken by the BPS in planning its publications which have a wide readership.

 

Graduation ceremony

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in Sri Lanka will hold its annual graduation ceremony at the BMICH on November 11. Minister of Trade and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake will be the key speaker. Twenty three Sri Lankan students will graduate in ACCA's professional qualification this year. For the first time, Sri Lankan students who have gained the highest marks for individual subjects within the qualification will also receive prizes.

Ajith Perera, Manager, ACCA Sri Lanka, said: "The ACCA professional qualification is relevant not only to students, but crucially to employers throughout the world in business, the public sector and private practice.

 

Housing project

The four acre land adjoining the Nittambuwa-Katunayake Road in the Veyangoda town had been acquired to build a housing project for the homeless from remote areas of Attanagalla electorate, Gampaha District Parliamentarian and Attanagalla UNF chief organiser Sarathchandra Rajakaruna said.

A large number of poor families who do not have shelter will benefit under this project, Rajakaruna said.

 

Ashok to raise funds for pre-school project

The film Ashok will be screened at the BMICH on November 17 at 10.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. to raise funds for the pre-school project of the Dharmavijaya Foundation. These funds will be used to upgrade and equip pre-schools in poor villages in remote areas under the foundation's 'Ladaru Guru Sevana' project. Many of these pre-schools are small sheds in a dilapidated condition and are found in villages in Moneragala and Bibile. They have no furniture or equipment.

 

Quality seed potato for Yala

Dambulla farmers who are planning to grow about 1,500 acres of potato in the Yala season are to get quality potato seed from an organisation called Savishakthi, according to Upali Pothwila, Chairman, Dambulla Govi Sanvidhanaya.

He said the organisation has successfully farmed a high quality potato seed called 'True Potato Seed', with high yield and costwise is cheap and easily cultivable. Asked whether the quality of seed is suitable for the upcountry area, it would suit us, Pothwila said. The seed will be examined by the Matale District Agricultural Department with whose co-operation they are carrying out their cultivation.
