Wrong directions can mar children's education - Minister

Telwatta group correspondent

Children's education can be shattered by listening to wrong directions and instructions given by unreliable people, said Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs, Karunasena Kodituwakku, when addressing the Annual Prize Giving ceremony of Sri Sumangala Central School, Hikkaduwa.

The school was founded in 1892 and was one out of the 54 schools selected in 1944 to be upgraded as a Central School in the Island. He said that unwise information reaching the children through all sorts of media give them the courage to embark on risky activities. Such dangerous incidents have taken place in schools in Nugegoda, Gampaha and some other schools.

The Minister said that teachers should adhere to their responsibilities. There are many teachers who leave school before their departure time. Teachers in remote areas must be given the opportunity to work in their home towns.

There are 27 excess teachers in Pannipitiya and 26 in Matara. Thirty six teachers transferred to Viyaluwa have not yet reported for duty and I have been given instructions to take disciplinary action against them, he said.
