960 centres to train youth for foreign jobs

Ratnapura group correspondent

The Labour Ministry has set up 960 centres to train youth for foreign jobs, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

The job-oriented training is under way to meet the demand for about 200,000 vacancies for Sri Lankans abroad, he said at a ceremony at the labour-training centre which caters to trainees for foreign employment in countries, including Italy, Malaysia and Korea.

Illegal Sri Lanka emigrants to Italy have died in the sea, while some were deported home, Samarasinghe said.

Arrangements are under way to find employment abroad for trained Sri Lankan youths, the minister said.

The centres provide training in English-language among other 'job-related' qualifications, he said. Proficiency in English is a key-requirement to fit into the computer-controlled world of the future, the Minister added.

Minister of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Karunasena Kodituwakku said though most Sri Lankans spoke highly of nationalism, they did not have even the basic needs including food, clothing and shelter, attempting to depend upon the government's Samurdhi allowance.

The PA and other mushroom parties without practicable programmes were opposing every progressive move of the UNF-administration forgetting that they were responsible for the country's plight, the Minister said.
