Z.M. Razik in Kandy Central Provincial Councillor Mahinda Abeykoon, his brother and another person, suspects in an alleged double cab van robbery case, were further remanded till November 13 by Kandy Magistrate D.L.M. Seniviratne when produced in court from remand. According to police, Sri Lal Kumara, Rohitha Abeykoon, Mahinda Abeykoon, Saliya Navaratne and several others are alleged to have robbed a double cab van valued at Rs. 450,000 used by Central Provincial Councillor D. Mathiyugaraja. The robbery is alleged to have taken place in the early hours near the Tennekumbura bridge. When the case was called attorney-at-law M.P. Jayasinghe appearing for third suspect Mahinda Abeykoon told court that on the day of the alleged robbery, third suspect was in remand in connection with some other case. He also moved that third suspect be released on bail. Inspector B. Jayatilleke, OIC Divisional Crime Detective Bureau (DCDE) Kandy told court that police inquiries have revealed that third suspect has used the robbed double cab van for several days and DCDB had recovered several parts of the robbed van. He also told court that second, third and fourth suspects are in remand under the Offences Against Public property Act No. 12 of 1982 and objected to bail. The magistrate ordered Inspector Jayatilleke to submit a complete report regarding the robbery and police inquiries to court on November 13 and re-remanded the second, third and fourth suspects. |
