President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a media communique has expressed her deep sorrow and shock on the death of undergraduate O.V.Samantha of Sri Jayawardenepura University following injuries sustained in the course of a clash between two student groups.

"This is one of the most tragic incidents in the history of our Universities. This unfortunate death is a glaring manifestation of the thorough degradation of discipline and morals among the University population today. The communique states that all sections concerned, must see to the prevention of similar incidents recurring in the university education system which is the nerve centre of human resources development targeting long drawn social development objectives.

"The relevant Minister as well as the University authorities concerned have been called upon to submit detailed reports on the incident immediately," states the communique.
