by Rajmi Manatunga A clash erupted in the Seeduwa area yesterday following the death of a prisoner held in the Seeduwa prisons. He was allegedly beaten inside the prison where he was detained for theft. Police fired in the air to disperse the unruly groups who were causing disturbances in the area yesterday morning. Clashes started when a group of people, believed to be associates of the deceased attacked the family who had complained against him and tried to forcibly take the body to the complainant's residence. "The incident took place around 12.30 am yesterday when the body was brought from the hospital where the prisoner was admitted after severe injuries. A group of people who are suspected to be friends of the deceased had gone to their rival's place and started assaulting them. But the Police went there immediately and kept the battling groups apart," OIC of the Seeduwa police told the Daily News adding that the group had hurled stones at police officers as well. It is reported that the man who had been detained for an alleged theft along with another suspect last week had complained that he was assaulted during imprisonment, before his death. The other suspect of the incident has been released on bail and the OIC said that a special group of police personnel have been deployed to tighten security in the area and prevent further clashes. |
