by Sarath Malalasekera Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, PC has received 135 complaints against Attorneys-at-Law who are alleged to have deceived their clients of several millions of rupees. There are five complaints against a criminal lawyer. He is alleged to have collected fees running into several lakhs of rupees from his clients. But not appeared for the cases. One of the complainants is a schoolmaster. The Chief Justice has assigned a Supreme Court Judge to peruse all complaints and submit his views in connection with those complaints within 21 days. 'If any person is found guilty, he would be issued a Rule,' the Chief Justice added. One lawyer had agreed to settle the issue with his client and had agreed to pay him a sum of Rs.100,000. Rs. 50,000 has been already paid. The Chief Justice appealed to all Attorneys-at-Law to maintain the highest standards of the noble profession. |
