Kandy HA stuns defending champs Colombo HA

The 30th Junior Hockey Nationals organised by the Kandy District Hockey Association on behalf of the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation got off to a shock start when the hosts Kandy HA scored a stunning 1-0 win over the defending champions Colombo Hockey Association at the Police grounds, Kandy yesterday. At the breather Kandy HA led 1-0.

Kandy scored their winning goal in the 4th minute of play when centre forward M. Munasinghe dribbled past two defenders and sounded the boards. Dharshana Wijesinghe and Indika Hewage umpired.

Defence Services also scored a good 1-0 win over Wennappuwa HA with centre-half and Sri Lanka national player Samal Peiris scoring the solitary goal in the 20th minute in the first half off a penalty stroke awarded to Wennappuwa goal-keeper straying out of the restricted area and smothering the ball with hand.

Matale HA scored the biggest win of the day slamming 9 goals against a hapless Matara HA's team after leading 6-0 during the first-half.

Goal getters for Matale were T. H.B. Wijekoon (3), S. B. Dissanayake (1), D. Kumara (1), K. S. B. Ratnayake (1), N. A. Hewage (1), D. S. Attygalle (1), T. K. Wickremaratne (1).

In another match Matale HA drubbed Sri Lanka Schools 'Maroons' 4-1 after a scoreless first half. K. S. B. Ratnayake (2), H. N. Hewage (1), and M. A. Ghazzally (1) were the goal scorers. T. I. Nelawansa scored for the Schools Maroons.

Sri Lanka Schools 'Golds' scored a 3-0 win over Mercantile HA after leading 2-0 at the breather. N. Dissanayake (2) and H. S. Hettiarachchi (1) scored for the Mercantile team.

Due to heavy rain and soggy ground conditions in one of the courts, some of the matches had to be shifted to University grounds, Peradeniya.

The above matches were officiated by Messrs. M. A. M. Ashroff, S. Jayasinghe, M. B. Herath, I. Hewage, S. Wijesinghe, D. Wijesinghe and Sadeesh Kumar. The tournament will be continued today at 7.30 a.m. and the finals will be worked off on Sunday at Police grounds at 4. p.m.

There was an impressive opening ceremony in which Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police and President, Sri Lanka Hockey Federation Jayatissa Herath was the chief guest with Hafiz Marikkar JP MMC and Rasiah Maheswaran (Secretary KDHA) both Old Sylsvestrians as guests of honour. The welcome address was made by Tissa Jayasinghe - President, KDHA. Chairman, Central Provincial Council D. Madhuyugarajah was also present as a special guest.
