Ashok Kumar rides in two winners for Austin Stable

The Sri Lanka Turf Club held a very successful Horse Race Meet on Sunday 3rd November, 2002 at the Nuwara Eliya Race Course to celebrate Deepavali festival. After the heavy rains in Nuwara Eliya for the past few days the going on the track was heavy.

Nigel Austin was the only owner to win 2 races for the day. The Champion Jockey for the day was Ashok Kumar. It was a well organised race meet by the officials of the Sri Lanka Turf Club headed by the dynamic President of the Club, Dhammika Attygalle and Rajan Sellamuttu, Chairman, Board of Stewards assisted by Rajah Sinnathuray and Mrs. Shantha de Zoysa. Miss Rohini de Mel assisted by Mrs. Maeve Martenstyne and Jith Peiris were the judges. Suranjith Premadasa was the Starter.

Sirimevan Senanayake was the Handicapper who did a wonderful job with the handicapping. Senanayake is a veteran in the game of horse racing who was associated with Upali Wijewardene one time Chairman, Board of Stewards of the Sri Lanka Turf Club and was responsible for reviving pony and horse racing in Nuwara Eliya.

Results of the 7 races

"NEGOMBO CUP" - Race for 1/2 bred horses was dominated by Nigel Austin's stable with "Pretty Girl" ridden by Jockey Ashok Kumar. Winning the race closely followed by "Nangi Girl" also from same stable ridden by S. D. Lalith.

"GALLE CUP" - For Thoroughbred Horses Class II sponsored by Monaro Group was won by "Nicodamus" an Indian thoroughbred stallion owned by Asif Noohu and ridden by M. Sudhakar.

"KALUTARA CUP" - For Thoroughbred Horses Class IV sponsored by Nimo & Co. (Pvt) Ltd., run over the distance of 5F brought the new comer to racing Roshan Motha his 1st win with "Millennium debutant" ridden well by Ashok Kumar.

"MATARA CUP" - Sponsored by Premadasa Riding School for Thoroughbred Horses Class I & II was won by "Crowning Star" owned and trained by Gamini Jayaratne was ridden by R. Selvakumar.

"NEW CRYSTAL COLOMBO CUP" - The most prestigious race sponsored by Upali Consumer Products Ltd., run over the distance of 9F for Thoroughbred Horses Class I was won by Indian thoroughbred mare "Libo Queen" owned and trained by Gamini Kodituwakku who is also the Champion Gentleman rider of Sri Lanka.

The winning jockey was S. D. Mahes. This was the biggest race for the day and had 7 runners. "Libo Queen" had stiff opposition in this race from "Turn to Gold". "KANDY CUP" - Sponsored by the Jayaratne Group for Thoroughbred Horses Class III was won by "Timeless Appeal" owned and trained by Anurath Abeyratne and ridden by V. Mathialagam.

"NUWARA ELIYA CUP" - The last race for the day sponsored by Grand Hotel for 3/4 bred horses Class I was won by "Satin Streak" owned and trained by Nigel Austin and ridden by S. D. Lalith.
