Ceylinco enters semis

Ceylinco Group booked their place in the semifinals with a close 53 points to 51 win over Hatton National Bank 'B' team in their Delmege Super League 'C' Division basketball tournament match played under lights at the Otters Aquatic Club courts yesterday.

S. Priyantha made a top score of 14 for Ceylinco who led 26-20 at half time. D. Dias contributed 12 points for Hatton National Bank 'B'. This win gave Ceylinco the top spot in the 'C' Division tournament followed by Maritime Holdings and Hatton National Bank 'B'.

Meanwhile Metropolitan Group completed their preliminary round matches in the 'D' Division tournament with a thrilling 45-44 win over Bartleet Group after having led 19-17 at half time. V. Malawana had a top score of 16 points for Metropolitan Group while Tony Peiris did the bulk of the scoring for Bartleet Group with 24 points.

Metropolitan Group who finished on top of the group will take on Union Bank in the first semifinal while Bartleet Group will meet Eagle Insurance in the second semifinal. In a 'B' Division tournament fixture David Pieris Motor Company Limited edged out Commercial Bank 74-71 after having led 37-27 at half time. Laksiri de Silva was the matchwinner for David Pieris with a good contribution of 25 points while Rajith Peiris contributed 17 points for Commercial Bank.

The tournament conducted by the Mercantile Services Basketball Association and sponsored by Delmege Group will be continued today at the same venue.

Madura in upset win

Bottom seed Madura Dananjaya of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda created a major upset when he beat the top seed Samuditha Ishan of Royal College in the boys under 13 singles final of the junior national table tennis championships which began at the Sugathadasa indoor Stadium yesterday.

The tournament conducted by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka will be continued today at 8.00 a.m.

Petes win 2-1

St. Peter's beat their traditional rivals St. Joseph's College by two goals to one in their 13th annual Battle of the Blues soccer encounter played at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

The Peterites were trailing 0-1 at half time but scored twice in the second half to turn the game in their favour and retain the Stanley de Silva trophy for the second successive year. Kavindu Muthuarachchi and Niranjan Sudagar scored a goal each for St. Peter's but it was Mohamed Asheem who was selected as the most outstanding player of the match. (D.W).

Chaminda, Shantha on ITN

Two Sri Lankan disabled athletes Chaminda Priyadarshana and Shantha Kumara who won gold medals at the recent Asia Pacific Disabled Games in South Korea, will be featured in the 'Vinivida' ITN sports program which will be telecast on Sunday from 8.00 a.m to 9.00 a.m.

The program will be compiled by Sarath Jayasinghe.
