Sri Lanka 192; South Africa 50/0 : Kallis 3/35 troubles Lankan batting Johannesburg, Nov. 8 - South Africa's five pronged pace attack ran amok with a startling display when they restricted Sri Lanka to 192 on the first day of the first cricket Test here in Wanderers. The pace attack comprising of Shuan Pollock, Makhaya Ntini, Steve Elworthy, Andrew Hall and Jacques Kallis combined pace with accuracy which constantly posed the problem of what to play and what to leave alone. The Sri Lankan batsmen were never in full control at any stage of the game besides a few sporadic batting displays by Marvan Atapattu, Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya and Hashan Tillekeratne. Jayasuriya batting lower in the order curtailed his attacking insting and showed signs of building the Sri Lankan innings with a 51 run stand with Mahela Jayawardena for the fourth wicket off 80 balls was a victim of hard working Kallis when he made one to rear up and Sanath Jayasuriya taking evasive action gloved one to Smith in the slips. The South African pace attack did not give the batsmen much of a respite as, the ball found the edge of the bat on numerous occasions and Greame Smith in the slips gleefully accepted three of the snicks while wicket keeper Boucher snapped up one. Jayasuriya won the toss and elected to bat first may be putting his trust on his ace spinner Muralitharan on the assumption that the wicket would change colour and character on the last day. But South Africa had early success when Arnold playing the role as opener was caught in the slips by Smith in Ntini's first over and the awful truth of what the Lankans will have to face while the match is in progress was revealed. Sangakkara joined by Atapattu confronted the South African bowlers fro a while adding 44 runs for the second wicket. At lunch Sri Lanka were 68 for 2 after facing 29 overs with Atapattu and Mahela at the crease. On resumption the game swung rapidly towards South Africa's way when the homesters captured 5 of the Sri Lankan wickets for 73 runs in 26 overs. Kallis got the prize wicket of Jayasuriya who looked capable of pulling Sri Lanka off the rut and in the same over made debutante Hashantha Fernando to play a mistimed pull towards short fine leg to be caught by Kirstan. Hashan Tillekeratne played a composed innings of 24 facing 64 balls striking three fours in 103 minute stay at the crease before he was run out. At the close South africa were 51 for 0 with Gary Kirstan (21 n.o.) completing 6,000 Test runs in his 86th Test match and Greame Smith 15 n.o. against some indisciplined Sri Lankan bowling.
