The President of the Association Sasuntha Gamlath addressing a news conference at the Mahaweli Centre yesterday said the JVP shows a different face to the masses while implementing a different agenda in universities. "A faction of undergraduates who label themselves as progressive front members are using thuggery and violence to suppress other students in the university. We all know that they are backed by the JVP." "Thursday's incident was not a clash between two student groups. It was an attack by them on students who oppose ragging," he said. "One student had to pay dearly today because the university authorities and the police were so lenient on this group despite hundreds of complaints by students. Our friend is now struggling between life and death." They demanded that the authorities take immediate action to punish those responsible for the attack and ensure safety in the university for students to continue their education without harassment and thuggery. "Students have now taken the initiative. There are anti-ragging groups in all universities now. A proper legal framework - the Anti- Ragging Bill is also there. We believe that with the correct attitude and the will, the authorities have the power to eradicate this menace from the universities for good." The Secretary of the Association Roshan Abayakumara and other members were also present. |
