He said that the government elected to power should always act on people's wish. People expected a general election in 1983. But the government decided to hold a referendum. At that time the UNP had the opportunity to win the general election. But they ignored the people's wish and opted for a referendum instead. This decision made the UNP face the consequences until the recent general election, said the Minister. The Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said, today we can see Tamil youths and elders in the Jaffna Peninsula. Life in Jaffna is normal. People are able to move about in the town without any check-points. All shops and government offices are functioning smoothly. The renovated Jaffna library will be opened shortly, he added. The Minister of Women's Affairs Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake said that our hope and ambition is to see a united and peaceful Sri Lanka where people can live in any part of the country in harmony. Senior Superintendent of Police North Western Province Ravi Wijegunawardana, Vice Principal of Ampara Bandaranayake Maha Vidyalaya Latha Warnasooriya and Chairman of the Kobeygane Pradeshiya Sabha Subasinghe Jayasundara also spoke. |
