by Ananda Kannangara Sri Lankan male workers seeking foreign jobs will get a good opportunity in the construction and shipbuilding sectors in Singapore from January next year. A 12 member delegation, headed by Chew Kim Whatt from the Overseas Manpower Placement Agencies Association in Singapore (OMPAAS) will visit Sri Lanka tomorrow (November 10) to discuss future available job opportunities with Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe. During their stay in Sri Lanka, the team is expected to hold a seminar at the BMICH on November 12 for 35 trainers, selected from the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) countrywide branches to improve the intake of Lankan manpower in Singapore. "This is a good opportunity for us to send male workers for the construction and shipbuilding sectors in Singapore for higher salaries since a large number of our females are employed there at present as domestic workers", SLBFE Chairman Susantha Fernando told the Daily News yesterday. "Therefore, we will commence vocational training programs in every district including the North and East and train youth, willing to seek employment in Singapore", he said. It is reported that nearly 12,000 Sri Lankans are currently in Singapore and 90 per cent of them are females, employed as helpers and domestic workers. |
