UNESCO has declared November 10 as World Science Day for Peace and Development, and decided to commemorate the day with events emphasising the importance of Science in achieving sustainable peace and to strengthen international ties for peace and development. UNESCO International is aiming to organise programmes to educate the general public and school children and teachers by conducting seminars and workshops on the importance of science in achieving peace. The Sri Lanka UNESCO Institute will seek the co-operation of the Science and Technology Branch of the Ministry of Education for those events. A competition for turning out science equipment would also be held. It will be open to children in Year 8 to Year 11 classes and valuable prizes and certificates will be awarded to the winners. The National Science Foundation has organised a seminar and a press conference at the BMICH on November 09 at 9.30 am to mark the day. |
