The Wennappuwa Nattandiya Lions Club, together with Voice of America (VOA), sponsored a community liaison health fair at St. Peter's School, Thoduwawa on October 26. Nearly 2,000 people living near the fishing village of Thoduwawa participated. St. Urusal's Ladies Club had arranged for seven physicians from the Marawila Base and Colombo's Ragama hospitals to provide medical examinations. Eye, nose, and throat examinations, as well as dental and general physical assessments were given. Rs. 50,000 in assorted medicines were provided by the Lions Club and dispensed by VOA nurse Sunsil Fernando. Blood donations were also collected for distribution by the Colombo Blood Bank. During the fair, donations were provided to the Lansigama Home for the Aged in Marawila. The donations included mattresses from VOA and bandages and food from Lion Eric Suriyasena, Chairman of Goldi Sands Hotel, Negombo. St. Peter's School received 700 books donated by members of the American Embassy's guard force, as well as computer equipment, given to the school by VOA. Others received 500 small coconut seedlings along with used clothing provided by the Lions club. The Divisional Secretary of Mahawewa and his staff issued marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, settlement of land disputes, and national identity cards, HQ Inspector Ananda Alwis, Commander of the Chilaw Police Station, handled complaints OIC L.T.N.U. Pathirathna of Iranawila Police arranged security at the fair. The keynote speaker was Lions Multiple District 306B Governor, Lion Origon Pinghe. Lions Club President Lion Priyantha Fernando was also present. |
