Lanka-India ferry service from Nov 16

by Tharika Goonathilake

The long-awaited ship service between Colombo and Tuticorin will start on November 16 with the first batch of passengers sailing on the `City of Trinco' ferry. Official sources at the Sri Lanka Ports Authority said that yesterday's scheduled MoU signing ceremony had to be postponed "due to unavoidable circumstances". "However, we understand that the final draft of the proposals sent to India for further perusal will be sent here within the next 72 hours," official sources told the 'Daily News' yesterday.

They said that once the draft is received the two countries can sign the MoU next week. Ports and Shipping Minister Rauf Hakeem will sign the agreement on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government while his counterpart Prakash Goyal will sign on behalf of India.

Meanwhile, the operators of the ferry service, GNKP Cruise Services, a subsidiary of GreenLanka Shipping said that there is a high demand for seats.

Green Lanka Shipping Pvt Ltd Chairman Captain Gamini Nanayakkara said that they were awaiting the green light to commence the ferry service.
