Rs. 80 lakhs to repair 21 tanks

by Kandy South Group Correspondent

Twenty-one tanks have been repaired at a cost of Rs. 80 lakhs. This will help feed 1,300 acres of land for cultivation of both Maha and Yala seasons of farmer communities in Dambulla, said the Minister of Central Region Development, Tissa Attanayake.

Speaking at a ceremony at Dambulla after inspecting the rehabilitation work by Matale Region Economic Development Project to 21 tanks in the region, the Minister said Rajarata in the past was famous for its water tanks which were built by Sinhala kings to irrigate paddy fields.

"Later these tanks became ruins. We can now repair these tanks with foreign assistance and donor agencies. Farmers in the area are facing a lot of problems without water to irrigate the fields. It is our duty to repair these tanks to enable them to make use of them", Attanayake said.
