Plenty of rain in Kandy, but water woes in Gurudeniya

by Kandy south group correspondent

Water woes of residents of Gurudeniya continue despite heavy rains in Kandy. Gurudeniya is a new town constructed under the Mahaweli Diversification Scheme.

Some areas in Gurudeniya New Town have not received water for the past 10 days.

Residents said if the water could not be supplied during rainy days, they fear as to what would happen during dry weather. Hindus celebrating Deepavali were the worst affected, as they did not have water even for ablution.

An official of Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha said they are aware of the problem and are trying to solve it.

Gurudeniya residents said the Kandy Four Gravets and Gangawata Korale Pradeshiya Sabha should ensure that the water supply be regulated by closing main valves to ensure an equitable distribution and not allow unauthorised persons to open and close valves at Tennekumbura and Talwatte areas by locking them.

It rains heavily especially in the afternoon in Kandy causing the Mahaweli Ganga which runs past Gurudeniya to swell. One child was also killed in a landslide at Meekanuwa in Ampitiya.
