Historic Nuga sapling needs attention

by Florence Wickramage

The sapling of the famous Gajaman Nona Nuga Tree planted recently by the side of the picturesque Pol Atu Oya needs urgent attention for its preservation say environmentalists.

A team appointed by Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake found this sapling on an inspection tour. After planting it they had erected a temporary fence around it.

Gajaman Nona pioneered the writing of Sinhala poems and was the first woman to voice in stanza-form the thoughts of a sad woman through her personal experiences. This area could emerge as a new eco-tourist destination due to its picturesque setting with the Pol Atu Oya flowing along by the ancient Neegrodharama Viharaya.

Visitors passing the area drop in to take a look at the Nuga Sapling. Environmentalists said the tree should be conserved by the local authorities with a permanent structure.
