by Florence Wickramage The sapling of the famous Gajaman Nona Nuga Tree planted recently by the side of the picturesque Pol Atu Oya needs urgent attention for its preservation say environmentalists. A team appointed by Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake found this sapling on an inspection tour. After planting it they had erected a temporary fence around it. Gajaman Nona pioneered the writing of Sinhala poems and was the first woman to voice in stanza-form the thoughts of a sad woman through her personal experiences. This area could emerge as a new eco-tourist destination due to its picturesque setting with the Pol Atu Oya flowing along by the ancient Neegrodharama Viharaya. Visitors passing the area drop in to take a look at the Nuga Sapling. Environmentalists said the tree should be conserved by the local authorities with a permanent structure. |
