by Ananda Kannangara The 30 per cent cut in the public service labour force, recommended by the Tissa Devendra Salary Commission will not be implemented until World Bank opinion is obtained said, Public Administration, Management and Reforms Minister Vajira Abeywardena. He said although the President has focused special attention towards the increasing of salaries, she had failed to spotlight the drastic reduction in the labour force, recommended in the report."We have already sent a detailed statement to the World Bank to obtain their views on the proposed retirement scheme, the salary increases and various other proposals, mentioned in the Commission report and hope for an early response from it to enable us to implement the scheme", he said. "However a comprehensive study on the salary increases of nearly 650,000 public servants, which is the vital part of the Commission report will be re-scrutinised to see whether the proposed salary scheme can be implemented, the Minister said. "Thereafter the accepted proposals will be put forward to the trade unions and administrative officials before it will be presented to the Cabinet for their approval", Abeywardena said. The Minister said that no persons are recruited to the public service now as per a circular issued by the Government recently. |
