2,000 families displaced by Deduruoya floods

by Uditha Kumarasinghe and Puttalam District Group Correspondent Prasad Purnamal

Nearly 2,000 families in Chilaw and Arachchikatuwa Divisional Secretariat Divisions have been displaced by the overflowing waters of Deduruoya.

This has severely affected Manuwangama, Vilaththwa, Dematapitiya, Isurugama and Elivitiya villages in these two Divisional Secretariat Divisions.

Villagers said they are facing such a deluge only after 10 years. The floods have severely affected villages located on the Northern side of Deduruoya.

Puttalam GA Jayalath Dissanayake has already made arrangements to shift the displaced to safe places. The majority of the displaced have been sent to the Veherakele temple and the Iyanayake Devalaya, Siththamadama. Puttalam District MP Neomal Perera with the assistance of Arachchikattuwa Pradeshiya Sabha have provided food and other dry rations to the victims.

Floods have damaged a high tension line which provides electricity to the Elivitiya area.

The Iginimitiya reservoir is also close to overflowing. "If this reservoir also overflows, it will lead to a similar disaster as a large number of families live in the vicinity."
