By S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen reporting from Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella

Suwen Selvaratnam with a triple win and Amrith de Soysa with two wins carried away the major honours at the seventh Sri Lanka Golf Festival 2002 organised by Victoria Golf Club with Sri Lanka Airlines as main sponsors concluded on Sunday evening at Rajawella in Digana.

Suwen Selvaratnam who won the Women's Gross Stableford last year was in menacing form this year as she piled up 60 points to retain the title in front by nine points over the experienced Yvonne Abhayaratne. In third place was Jackie Bettles with 49 points after a count back as Dhinuka Boralessa too had 49 points.

Suwen Selvaratnam's second title was in the Women's Best Nett Aggregate Stableford score when she notched up 76 points with Indira Tibblin a close second with 73 points. In fact it was in the second game that Suwen Selvaratnam was able to forge ahead with 39 points against 35 by Indira Tibblins. Suwen Selvaratnam completed the triple crown when she annexed the Senior Division Women's title with 76 points and Indira Tibblin had to be contented with the second place with 73 points.

This competition was a roaring success with over 250 golfers participating and among them were 90 foreigners and 50 locally resident foreigners and rest were local golfers. Golfers arrived from 12 countries and they were happy with the course and the tournament and this will boost up tourism. The General Manager of the Victoria Golf Club Tony Witham said that on the third day there was such a large number that they were full up and had to despatch many of them to Nuwara Eliya to enable them to play.

The Four day festival which began on Thursday ended on Sunday and bright and sunny weather greeted them throughout and the golfers not only enjoyed their golf on this brilliantly laid undulating course but also the weather and the cool breeze wafting after the coconut plantation.

H. Behrens won the Mens Senior Division with 70 points and the best Nett Stableford Aggregate was by Iskander Saruddin with 73 points while the winner of the Gross Stableford Gross scored with 61 points was teenager Amrith de Soysa who also carried away the junior title with 67 points.
