Cabinet paper to obtain Rs. 25m to dredge tanks - Minister Kularatne

Minister of Southern Region Development Ananda Kularatne addressing the gathering after opening the region office of the Ministry of Southern Region Development at the Hambantota Kachcheri premises, said that a Cabinet paper had been submitted to obtain a sum of rupees 25 million to dredge abandoned tanks in the Southern Region to ease the scarcity of water for irrigational activities during the drought season.

He said, the Canadian High Commission had also shown their willingness to assist renovation of tanks in the region. This would enhance the productivity of the region in the near future.

Minister Kularatne disclosed that it was one of his dreams to bring the Ministry of Southern Region to this part of the island and he was happy to do so even though it took some time.

I was able to bring several mega projects to expedite the development of the region and thereby to provide a better living standard for the people of this region, the Minister said.

He said, the attention of the investors had been focused to his region as it was a region of rapid development and a region full of resources and potential. Several multinational companies have shown their willingness to invest in the region and this will boost the financial condition of the people.

Hambantota district MP Chamal Rajapaksa said, although there were differences in the field of politics, the sole aim of the politicians in the district was to serve the masses in whatever way possible to the utmost satisfaction of the people.

He said, he was able to develop the Hambantota district using the available resources in the district.

We were able to construct the Maw Aara - project using local funds and the people of the Hambantota district now reap the harvest of the project, MP Chamal Rajapaksa said.

SPC member Tennakoon Nilame, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Southern Region Development Wije Wickramarathna, Chairman, Hambantota UC D.A. Gamini, Chairman, Hambantota PS Kamal Samarathna and several others also spoke.

GA Hambantota district Ananda Amarathunga delivered the welcome speech.
