Human resource centres in schools

by Manjula Fernando

The Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry will set up Human Resource Centres in all national schools shortly.

These centres will play the role of a counselling body providing guidance to students on selecting academic courses to match their skills and preferences from as early as GCE Advanced Level, a Ministry spokesman said yesterday.

The spokesman said: "A proper mechanism to give advice to students on selecting suitable study courses had been a shortcoming in schools. At the university stage, students have already chosen their respective path and it is too late to turn back."

All students, in common, study between eight and ten subjects at Ordinary Level. Based on their preferences and OL results, they choose one of four streams at the AL stage - Physical, Bio, Commerce and Arts. "It is at this stage that proper guidance is required," he said.

"The Private Sector which had been monitoring recent developments concerning state schools has pointed out the need for such a mechanism to produce a confident and properly trained workforce."

According to the spokesman, an attorney will be in charge of the Human Resource Centre which will also be responsible for creating awareness among students on areas such as human rights, responsibilities of citizens, women and child abuse and their specific rights.

The program will get off the ground on the International Human Rights Day - December 10. The centres will initially be set up in 25 selected schools islandwide.
