by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ministry will launch a fresh programme to revive mannar's fishing industry affected by the war. This follows Minister Mahinda Wijesekera's visit to the area on Sunday to gather information on the area's fishing industry. Wijesekera also met LTTE representatives in the Mannar area. "They discussed steps that should be taken to upgrade area's fishing industry," he told the Daily News yesterday. He said both parties agreed on measures to be implemented for the fishing community's benefit and to upgrade their social and economic conditions. The discussion focussed on improving anchorage facilities, fish market, boats and fishing gear, cold rooms and other infrastructure. The Minister has appointed a committee comprising 15 members including Fisheries Ministry officials, LTTE representatives, Police and Navy officials and other civil organisations. The committee will look into problems in the fishing industry and identify programme to provide relief to the fishing community, the Minister said adding fishing facilities will be improved on the committee's recommendation. |
