by Florence Wickramage There is hope yet again to revive the historical nuga Tree in Denipitiya of Gajaman Nona fame which was cut down to make way for the construction of a proposed cultural centre. Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake appointed a three-member committee to visit the area after this was highlighted in newspapers and also demonstration. The committee includes Additional Secretary Sunil Sarath Perera, Director Botanical Gardens Prof. Cyril Wijesundere and Director Bio-Diversity Unit Gamini Gamage. The three-member committee accompanied by Ven. Dharmapala Thera of Nigrodaya Temple were relieved to find a tiny sprout of the nuga tree during a visit to the site. Perera said they removed the sprout with care and planted it by the Pol-atu river to commemorate National Tree Planting Day and Month. The historical nuga tree features in the famous Gajaman Nona tale in a series of stanzas as Denipitiye Nuga Ruka", Perera said.
