by Ananda Kannangara An islandwide campaign to eliminate child labour and abuse has been initiated by the Labour Ministry. The campaign launched on Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe's directive is supported by the International Labour Organisation and International Programme on Elimination of Child Labour. The Ministry will also work with the police and the media to highlight cases of abuse, Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe told the Daily News. "I have asked for cooperation of personnel and organisations in-charge of child-related activities to make the campaign a success," Samarasinghe said. Seminars and workshops for authorised officials and elders will also be conducted. Samarasinghe said public awareness was a key issue in tackling the problem following the increase in child labour in various parts of the country, daily. "It is the responsibility of all to wage a war against child labour," the Minister said. One key feature of the campaign will be a complaints' monitoring team that will seek public cooperation to crackdown those involved in child labour. Samarasinghe said once cases are detected, the victims will be sent to probation and childcare service centres in the country. "They will be then educated or given vocational training to ensure that they are equipped with the skills," the Minister added.
