Customers eagerly await Pramuka Bank reopening

Customers of the now suspended Pramuka Bank are eagerly awaiting the Central Bank of Sri Lanka to expeditiously complete its investigations into the bank and reopen it for operations, Pramuka Bank Chairman Rohan Perera told the Daily News yesterday.

Despite the Central Bank being armed with statutory provisions to continue the investigations for the next 60 days beginning October 25, the Bank's management is very confident that the investigations would be concluded within the next few days and reopened for operations, he said.

Meanwhile, Pramuka Bank sources said that customers of the bank had agitated for the CBSL to conclude its investigations within 24 hours. Frayed tempers were the order of the day with some customers demanding from Pramuka as to why the CBSL could not conduct its investigations during the weekend thereby leaving the customers to engage themselves in normal banking activities.

The sources also said that customers were in total disarray as they were unable to complete their banking operations in terms of emergency withdrawals.

Among the customers who had agitated were a family member of a patient who was warded for surgery at the Durdan's Hospital while another customer was getting married.

Banking sources also query how the Central Bank had deemed Pramuka Bank was ill-liquid while the bank was liquid and cash rich.

Earlier, Central Bank's Deputy Governor Manik Nagahawatte was quoted in the Daily News yesterday saying that according to the preliminary investigations of the CBSL, Pramuka was deemed ill-liquid.
