CR and CH revive rivalry for third time

by Chris Dhambarage

CR and FC and CH and FC will revive their rivalry for the third time in the current season when they clash in the first semifinal of the Premier Champions Trophy knock out inter-club rugby tournament at the Sugathadasa Stadium today.

Both teams have already figured in two fascinating contests in the League championship and another rousing game of rugby is on the cards. CR and FC won the first round fixture by 19 points to 14 in a thriller but lost the second round game 8-17. This means that CR and FC are determined to settle the scores and avenge their defeat and also book a place in next week's final.

CR and FC probably had the easiest entry into the semifinals by outplaying newcomers Galle RFC by a massive margin of 73 points to nil. This time however they will be under tremendous pressure and will be hoping that their key players would deliver the goods. In contrast CH and FC had a tough quarterfinal fixture where they were stretched to the maximum before overcoming arch rivals Havelocks Sports Club 3-2 on penalties.

Isipatana favourites

Meanwhile in the under-19 inter-school 15 a side knock out tournament Isipatana will take on Dharmaraja College Kandy in the first semifinal today. Isipatana will go in as the favourites simply because of their reputation of playing well even under tough conditions. In addition they will be fielding several big guns with them who have done a tremendous service to the school in the current inter school season. Not only that they will be going into this game with their heads high having recorded a morale boosting 44-nil win over Carey College in the quarterfinals.

This means the Rajans have a tough assignment and the odds are heavily against them. But they would certainly cause some concern to the opposition having trounced Nalanda 22-7 earlier in their quarterfinal fixture. St. Peter's College will confront Science College in the second semifinal schedule for Sunday.

Close result expected

Ananda and Wesley will battle it out in the first semifinal of the under-17 inter-school 15 a side tournament today. Both teams had a comfortable entry to the semifinals and a close result could be expected. The Anandians routed Science College 36 nil and Wesley outplayed Mahanama MV 34-3. Prince of Wales College Moratuwa who beat the more fancied Nalanda in the quarterfinals will meet Isipatana in the second semifinal scheduled for Sunday.

The semifinals of the under 15 inter school 12 a side tournament and the under 13 inter school ten a side tournament will also be worked off today commencing at 3.30 p.m. Royal will take on Thurstan in the first semifinal of the under 15 tournament. In the quarterfinals Royal had the better of Vidyartha 10 nil and Thurstan edged out Nalanda 5-3. Wesley College will meet St. Sylvester's in the second semifinal tomorrow

St. John's v Sri Rahula

St. John's College will be hoping for another giant killing performance when they confront Sri Rahula MV in the under 13 tournament first semifinal. St. John's had the distinction of defeating Wesley College earlier in the quarterfinals and are determined to produce a repeat performance. Sri Rahula MV too have made steady progress in this tournament having beaten Mahanama MV (12 nil) in the pre quarterfinals and Vidyartha (26 nil) in the semifinals.

Isipatana are also in contention for the under 13 title and will be meeting Dharmaraja College Kandy in the second semifinal tomorrow. In the quarterfinals Isipatana scored a rousing 63 nil win over Zahira College and the Rajans defeated Science College 36 nil.

The tournament is organised and conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union and the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association.
