by Rashomi Silva Rural Economy Development and Deputy minister of Finance Bandula Gunawardana urged the Sri Lankan Engineering community to come up with a low cost housing project for low income earning groups. The minister was addressing a seminar on 'Solutions to the national problem of urban solid waste disposal conducted by the Institute of Engineers of Sri Lanka (IESL) yesterday. The minister said even the developed countries have special housing schemes designed from the resources available in the locality have a very good faith in the skills and abilities of the Sri Lankan professional and he is confident that the Sri Lankan engineers will come up with a suitable proposal. He said that he has designed Rural Economy centres to be set up in major commercial centres outside Colombo. "I expressed my confidence in the Central Engineering Authority (CEA) and in the Sri Lankan professional by entrusting all the construction to the CEA. "I have set them a dead line, I should have my buildings before that and I have seen reasonable progress", he said. Gunawardana said for the first time in the post independent history the country's economy had reached a negative value. But the government during its short time in office had been able to raise the economy growth rate to 2.5 percent and the government aims to increase it to 3 percent before the end of this year. |
