by Nadira Gunatilleke The Social Welfare Ministry has released a sum of Rs. 1.14 million as flood relief. The funds were released on a directive by Social Services Minister Ravindra Samaraweera after officials briefed him on the extent of the damage. Over 800,000 families have been displaced in the recent floods which also caused extensive damage to crops and livestock. Gampaha witnessed the worst flood damage where 5,942 families were rendered homeless, Secretary to Ministry of Social Services Viji Jegarajasingham said. The Ministry Secretary said Rs. 700,000 has been allocated for the Gampaha district while Rs. 100,000, Rs. 115,000, Rs.125,000 and Rs.100,000 have been allocated for Kalutara, Colombo, Galle and Matara districts respectively. 1,108 families have been affected in the Galle district, while 640 and 400 families have been affected in Colombo and Matara districts respectively. Minor floods have been reported in parts of Kalutara. Ratnapura, too, had experienced floods although no details are available of the extent of the damage, the Secretary said. The Meteorological Department reported Thursday that Kalatuwawa received the highest rainfall of 35.8 mm while Katunayake received 34.7 mm during the last 24 hours. It forecast showers in the Western coastal areas particularly during the day time. Light rains may occur in the Northern Province with showers or thundershowers expected in the Sabaragamuwa, Uva, North Central, Central and Eastern Provinces particularly during the afternoons or evenings. |
