by Florence Wickramage The Muslim community has an important role in establishing peace in Sri Lanka. Their population distribution was such that they could act as an uniting force to bring about closer understanding between the Sinhala and Tamil communities, said Parliamentary Affairs Minister A. H. M. Azwer. Addressing the 85th anniversary of the YMMA at the Hamza Muslim Maha Vidyalaya, Mutwal, recently the Minister said whatever their political differences, the Muslims' primary duty was to ensure that the government's peace efforts were not disrupted. The people were free to travel at any time between the North and the South and East and West. No political party should disturb this peaceful environment, Azwer said. History records the political wisdom of Muslim leaders and freedom fighters in the calibre of Dr. T. B. Jayah, Dr. Kaleel, Sir. Razik Fareed and many others. The YMMA was founded by H. A. Marjan who was regarded as a pious person. The YMMA was the political launching pad of Dr. Kaleel, its first President, Azwer said. Deputy Mayor of Colombo Azath Sally and Colombo Additional District Coroner Ashraf Roomy also spoke. |
