Minister wants computer education expanded

by Kalutara group correspondent

Computer education must be expanded throughout the country by introducing computer classes in schools and government institutions. Only 2.7 per cent of the population is educated in this field. Atleast 40 per cent should be computer literate for the country to enter the global village concept, said Minister of Employment and Labour, Mahinda Samarasinghe.

Addressing the District Development Committee meeting at Kalutara District Auditorium recently, he said he invited Sampath Dassanayake, a competent computer officer and former Minister Indradasa Hettiarachchi who has contributed to develop Daham Pasala (Sunday Schools) education in the district to the function.

It is essential that ministers, MPs and local bodies work together for the programme to be a success, Samarasinghe said.

Minister of Mass communication Imthiaz Bakeer Markar said computers should be distributed to all administration bodies through Pradeshiya Sabhas in the district.

This programme should focus mainly on developing schoolchildren studying in grades between 6 and 10 in all schools, he said.

Kalutara Government Agent Yasmin Siriwardena who prepared a year plan Sandesaya, handed it over to Minister Samarsinghe.

Indradasa Hettiarachchi, former Minister Sampath Dassanayake, Kalutara District MP P.D. Abeyratne, Mrs. Siriwardana and several others also spoke.
