by Florence Wickramage The flying squad of the Department of Wildlife Conservation has conducted several successful raids during the past few days. On a tipoff the flying squad raided a private company in Nugegoda - Creations Garments and took into custody the Personnel Manager, Sudath Perera for having in his custody nine Soft Terrapins. The Soft Terrapins were confiscated and the suspect was charged for violating the provisions of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance. The Gangodawila Magistrate fined the suspect Rs. 10,000, half of which was to be diverted to the Wildlife Conservation Fund. In another incident the Flying Squad confiscated four Star Tortoises and two hard terrapins being reared in a pond belonging to Samarakoon Bandara of Boralesgamuwa. The suspect was charged for violating the provisions of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance and was fined Rs. 10,000 by the Gangodawila Magistrate. Half of the money was to be diverted to the Wildlife Conservation Fund. In a third raid, the Flying Squad confiscated another two Star Tortoises in the possession of Don Gamini Wickremesinghe of Kohuwela. The Mount Lavinia Magistrate fined the suspect Rs. 15,000 for violating the provisions of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance. Half the fund was diverted to the Wildlife Protection Ordinance. In all three instances the Magistrates instructed the Wildlife Officials to release the confiscated Soft Terrapins, Star Tortoises and the Hard Terrapins to suitable nature reserves. The raids were conducted by Wildlife Guard, M. Faiz and Rangers Lalith Vijithananda and Kamal Lalith Peiris. |
