Investigation to ascertain cause of sudden power cut

by Rashomi Silva

An investigation is currently on to ascertain the cause of an islandwide power failure which occurred suddenly yesterday morning, a top CEB official told the Daily News.

The Additional General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Ranjith Fonseka said that they had been able to restore the entire power supply within an hour after the sudden break down of the islandwide power supply around 9 am.

Commenting on the frequent power failures experienced during past few days Fonseka said from the beginning of this year, the CEB had undertaken rehabilitation and development programmes at the Kollona receiving station and Lakshapana power station to improve the reliability of the power supply and distribution systems.

"The transmission lines have to be shut down on and off", he said. Various external and internal disturbances caused by repairing, lowers the system reliability making it to collapse from time to time". Fonseka said.
